Mangaluru:
Former Union Minister and senior Congress leader Janardhan Poojary today warned of a Chennai-like disaster in Karnataka if the government proceeded with the Yettinahole river diversion project.
Addressing reporters at the District Congress Committee office in Mangaluru, Mr Poojary said the Chennai disaster was a man-made one and such calamities could happen when environmental problems were not addressed before implementing a project.
Though the state government and opposition were supporting the project, it would only end up in a tragedy like what happened in Chennai, he said.
The state government should learn from the disaster and the day would not be far away when such a thing might happen in the state. "The consequence will be ten times greater than what happened in Chennai," he said.
The proposed Yettinahole project intended to divert the west-flowing river to the east, which would cause damage to the Western Ghats. "Tragedies are bound to happen if the Western Ghats are destroyed to construct dams and divert water bodies. Nobody can mess with nature," he said.
He requested Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to show humanitarian concern by granting more relief to Tamil Nadu than had been announced earlier. At least Rs 25 crore should be sanctioned to the state, he urged.
