- 21-year-old poisoned because she was involved with a Dalit man, say cops
- She was given mango juice laced with poison her brother bought
- Mysuru woman's parents and brother arrested
Bengaluru:
The parents of a young woman in Karnataka's Nanjangud - 33 km from Mysuru -- have been accused of poisoning her due to her relationship with a man from a different caste. Police say 21-year-old Madhukumari was in love with a Dalit, Jayaram.
Initially, a case of unnatural death had been filed. But on further investigation, the police learnt of the relationship and the family's opposition to it.
They say the girl's brother had bought the pesticide, which was mixed with mango juice and given to Madhukumari on Monday. The girl was provided with no medical attention and she died later that evening.
The police have arrested the girl's parents -- Gurumallapa, 64, and Manjula, 48 -- and her brother Guruprasad, 26.
No postmortem could be done as her body has been cremated. They have recovered the glass in which the poison had been given, the police said.
They also found some documents, including letters written by Madhukumari to Jayaram, in which she wrote that she feared for her life.
Jayaram has been provided protection by the police. Cases of murder and destruction of evidence have been filed.
