Eliminate mental deformities, says Dr APJ Abdul Kalam
Bangalore: Emphasising on the need for more research work for the welfare of mentally challenged children, former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam said that there was a need to find out what goes wrong in the brains of these children.

"Neurosurgeons today face two challenges. One is to find out what went wrong in the brains of mentally challenged children, and other is causes of brain cancer. We have to see that children of mentally challenged children are born normally," the former president said.

Dr Kalam was speaking at Neurocon 2011, in which more than 1,000 neurosurgeons - members of Neurological Society of India and Society Italiana Neurochirurgia, participated at National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences on Thursday.

"I asked myself, what miracle will happen if combination of these two societies' members will work together to find out reasons for these two challenges related to brain," said Kalam.

He said that the solution should be found by 2016. He also suggested that neurosurgeons and neurologists must try to eliminate the brain deformities.

He urged that a single platform be created for neurosurgeons and neurologists at a global level.

He also maintained that the increasing number of road accidents is a major concern and proposed that the neurosurgeons should come out with definitive guidelines to reduce such accidents and study the cause of such accidents.
