Bengaluru: Heavy rainfall has been forecast in coastal areas and south interior parts of Karnataka over the next 24 hours, as the southwest monsoon remained vigorous over the state, the Met department said today.

"Heavy to very heavy rain to occur in coastal areas, the Western Ghats in Malnad and many parts of south interior and north interior regions, as monsoon intensified across the state," a Met official told IANS in Bengaluru.

With a low pressure forming over the west central Bay of Bengal off coastal Andhra Pradesh earlier in the day, conditions were favourable for the monsoon to remain active across Karnataka over the next 48 hours.

Widespread rains occurred at most places in coastal areas, many in south interior and at a few places in north interior parts of the state during the last 24 hours, with Udupi and Manki recording 60mm rainfall, Kundapur and Agumbe 50mm each, and Mangaluru, Bantwal, Mani and Shirali on the coast 40mm each.

Forecast for Bengaluru is overcast sky with one or two spells of light to moderate rain towards evening or night with strong surface winds.
