Karnataka HC appoints transgender as its staff

Bangalore: A transgender was yesterday appointed a group 'D' staff member in the Karnataka High Court, perhaps the first-of-its-kind in its history.

The appointment letter was handed over to Anu by Supreme Court judge and Executive Chairman of National Legal Services Authority Justice Altamas Kabir at the valedictory function of the Mega Lok Adalat held there.

Born as a male, Anu became a transgender at the age of eight. An organisation approached the High Court Legal Services Committee seeking help for Anu, leading to the appointment, said Mustafa Hussain Service Authority Member-Secretary, High Court Legal Services Committee.

Kabir lauded the Mega Lok Adalat, which has helped reduce pendency of cases in courts.

In the Principle Bench at Bangalore 1,257 cases were listed, 473 disposed and compensation of Rs 3.90 crore settled.
