The Karnataka government has already ordered an SIT probe into the allegations.
Bengaluru:
The BJP in Karnataka has submitted a memorandum to the Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala asking for a CBI inquiry into the recent allegations of corruption against the Lokayukta's office. They also want Lokayukta Justice Bhaskar Rao to resign.
"Karnataka Lokayukta is a very prestigious institution. Karnataka Lokayukta was very powerful Lokayukta, this was known to everybody. Today there is an allegation of corruption charges against Lokayukta. So, we have requested the Governor that it should be handed over, this case should be handed over to CBI, where free and fair probe will be done," said BJP lawmaker PC Mohan, after meeting the Governor.
The Congress government in the state has ordered an SIT probe into the issue, but the BJP is not satisfied with that.
"See, the government is not serious. Because the government, as you are aware, lot of them indulged in lot of corruption cases. So they are not keen on this probe," Mr Mohan said.
A charge had been made by an engineer that in early May, in the Lokayukta office, he had been asked for a bribe of one crore rupees to avoid being raided. An FIR was filed on this complaint on Wednesday morning by SP Sonia Narang, who is on deputation to the Lokayukta - she is the officer who forwarded the original complaint to the Lokayukta registrar.
The FIR has the name of Ashwin, the son of the Lokayukta, who had successfully approached the High Court for a stay on an internal Lokayukta inquiry ordered by the Upalokayukta, Justice Subhash B Adi.
The allegations have tarnished the image of the Lokayukta's office, but Lokayukta Justice Bhaskar Rao has made it clear that he was not in any hurry to step down. He had told the media on Tuesday, "Question of resigning does not arise. I will see that everything is settled. The guilty will punished, whoever it is, including my son."
