Forest authorities are trying to rescue elephant Sidda who has been drifting near a dam in Karnataka
A wild elephant named Sidda, crippled by a leg injury, now spends most of his time in the backwaters of Manchanabele dam in Karnataka to cope with the pain after a tusker broke his front right leg last month.
Forest authorities are trying to rescue the animal who has been drifting into the dam, about 30 km from Bengaluru, for over 40 days now. Animal lovers have been arranging food for the elephant.
It was certainly a jumbo task to get the right treatment for the injured elephant, but much of heavy lifting was done by fellow elephants brought from Mysuru for the purpose.
It was not possible to completely sedate Sidda, because of his medical condition, so the paramedic pachyderms held Sidda in a grip to allow vets to give him treatment for his injuries.
"We operated on him and along with antibiotics we have also given him intravenous saline," said Dr KK Sharma of the Guwahati Veterinary College, Assam. He was kept under observation.
"Since the media highlighted the issue, the government and the forest officials have swung into action," wildlife activist Kiran Kumar told NDTV.
