Student Suicide: Siddaramaiah Targets Smriti Irani, Bandaru Dattatreya

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah alleged that Rohith Vemula committed suicide after the HRD Ministry wrote letters to Hyderabad University.

Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah today targeted Union Ministers Smriti Irani and Bandaru Dattatreya over the suicide of research scholar Rohith Vemula of Hyderabad University, alleging that such a "condition" was created by them.

"Central Minister Bandaru Dattatreya and concerned (HRD) minister Smriti Irani are responsible for the suicide of Dalit scholar Vemula because they were the ones who created such a condition," he told reporters in Bengaluru.

Mr Siddaramaiah alleged that Mr Vemula committed suicide after the HRD Ministry wrote letters to Hyderabad University.

The HRD Ministry had written as many as five letters to the university after receiving a complaint from Mr Dattatreya alleging anti-national activities in the campus and the violent attack on an ABVP leader.

However, the Ministry has been maintaining that it followed the standard practice by writing to the university, seeking its response on issues raised by Mr Dattatreya to be examined and facts intimated.

Meanwhile, Ms Irani today said the suicide note by Mr Vemula does not talk about any MP or political party and Mr Dattareya's is not the only one and that even Congress lawmaker Hanumantha Rao wrote a letter raising issues pertaining to the university.
