Five people were killed and 20 others injured after a private bus they were travelling in overturned near Pavagada in Tumkur district of Karnataka on Saturday.
Police said initial investigations suggest that the bus, which was carrying around 60 passengers, turned turtle after the driver lost control over the vehicle.
According to witnesses, the bus was overcrowded and mostly students were travelling in it.
20 passengers have been hospitalised, police officials said, adding further investigation was underway.
Expressing grief over the incident, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu in a tweet said, "Deeply anguished to hear about the loss of lives in a bus accident in Tumkur, Karnataka. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. Prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured."
