Thiruvananthapuram: Nearly 30 stray dogs were killed in Kerala's Varkala on Thursday morning by angry locals, a day after a 90-year-old man died due to dog bites.
Charuvila Raghavan was bitten and mauled by a pack of stray dogs while he was asleep outside his house in Varkala, which is 45 kilometres from state capital Thiruvananthapuram.
Jose Maveli, who heads the Stray Dogs Eradication Group in Kerala reached Varkala this morning, backed by the locals and killed stray dogs en mass.
"I was called by locals here for support. They have killed the strays. People are so upset and angry," Jose Maveli told NDTV.
While the police has filed cases against the killers, angry locals stood by the violators, not allowing the police to arrest them.
In another incident from Kozhikode, on Wednesday, two-year-old Fathima Nasreen was bitten by strays while she was playing outside her house.
"She was just playing by herself and suddenly her mother heard her howling and crying. When she rushed outside, she saw her bitten by strays," said Abdul Razzak, the child's grandfather.
An animal lover Rakesh Shankar from Kozhikode says, "Dogs are not dangerous. It's just that they are feeding on the waste thrown all over and have got a taste of flesh. We need to manage that and no one has the right to kill dogs."
