Kerala multi-millionaire Mohammad Nisham, who has been given life term and an additional 24 years imprisonment for the murder of a security guard by driving his Hummer into him, has allegedly been given a "helper" inside Kannur jail.
Known locally as the "beedi king" of Kerala, 39-year-old Nisham had been convicted for the murder of Chandrabose, the security guard of his posh residential society in Thrissur, whom he ran over with his Hummer after the man fumbled while opening the gates, causing some delay.
Sources say, the business tycoon has been kept at a block meant for mentally-challenged people to help relax jail rules for him. According to jail rules, inmates at this block are not compelled to work on daily basis unlike other inmates.
Director General of Prisons, Rishi Raj Singh, has ordered an enquiry into alleged special treatment given to the businessman.
Mr Nisham's stay in jail had been controversial. On one journey back from court, he was filmed on security cameras treating his police escorts to a lavish meal. The VIP treatment created a new wave of local anger against him. Five policemen were suspended.
A repeat offender, Mr Nisham has been an accused in 13 cases, many of which were settled out of court.
Three years ago, a video of his nine-year-old son driving a Ferrari was uploaded on YouTube, resulting in a police case and outrage over the audacity of the entrepreneur.
Mohammed Nisham had ploughed his Hummer into a security guard.
The arrest took place in January last year after the Hummer case evoked widespread outrage. An year after in January this year the court convicted him in the case and gave him the life term and fined Rs. 71.3 lakh, of which Rs. 50 lakh was payed to the security guard's wife.
Drunk and furious, not only did Mr Nisham ram the SUV into 51-year-old man, he pinned him to a wall, dragged him for 700 metres, stomped on him and then shouted "this dog will not die," the prosecution has told the court. Chandrabose died in hospital nearly three weeks after the savage assault.
