Suddenly, the jawan opened fire from his service rifle, fatally injuring the inspector around 11.30 pm at a higher secondary school at Kottakal, where the central security personnel drafted for poll duty are accommodated.
Mr Meena was rushed to a hospital but died on the way, police said.
A Special Investigation Team under Circle Inspector Payyoli has been formed to investigate the case, they said, adding the rifle abandoned by him at some distance away had been recovered.
