Kochi: CBI sleuths conducted searches at the Ezhimala Naval Academy in Kannur and elsewhere in connection with alleged illegal sale of sand worth Rs 1.04 crore from the academy since 2010.

A case was registered and some documents seized from the academy during the raids, CBI sources said.

Commander Mukundan N Rajeev, who had recently been transferred from the academy, and Singapore-based NRI Ashraf, Managing Director of ASR Dredging India Ltd, are cited as the accused in the case.

Searches were also conducted at the residence of Rajeev at Vishakapatnam and at the office and residence of Ashraf here and Kannur, the sources said.

The dredging company had the contract to deepen the boat training centre of the Waterman Ship Training Institute at the academy.

The sand was to have been kept at the academy itself.

However, it was taken out and sold.

It was allegedly with the connivance of the Naval official the sand could be taken out of the academy complex, the sources said.

Naval sources said Commander Rajeev, who was transferred a couple of months ago to the Eastern Naval command, was working at the academy under the Director General of Naval Academy Project.
