Chamber concerned over delay in acquiring land for airport

The delay in land acquisition for expansion of Kozhikode International Airport at nearby Karippur would "adversely" affect development of the airport, the Malabar Chamber of Commerce said here today.

"The decision of the government to acquire 137 acres of land for the airport and 20 acre for rehabilitation purpose has not been implemented," the chamber said in a statement.

The delay is "adversely affecting development of the airport", it said.

The Revenue officials or people's representatives were not taking any steps for acquiring the land, it said. A committee, headed by Kerala Industries Minister P K Kunhalikutty, constituted to hold discussions with the people to sort out their disputes with regard to land acquirement, had met only once and no follow up action was taken till now, the chamber said.

A memorandum has been submitted to Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, Revenue Minister Thiruvanchur Radhakrishnan, Excise and Airport Minister K Babu and Kunhalikutty, urging for speeding up the land acquiring work, the release said.
