111 people died and around 1000 were injured in a massive fire at Puttingal Devi temple in Kollam.
Early investigations into the Puttingal temple fire show use of chemicals in the fireworks which are traditionally not used by Indian fireworks manufacturers. Sources in the government said that the first test reports indicate the presence of chemicals manufactured in China and used by the fireworks industry there.
These early reports indirectly clear Indian fireworks manufacturers mostly clustered in parts of Tamil Nadu. If these findings are confirmed, officials will not investigate these fireworks manufacturers in Tamil Nadu where the election process has already begun.
Earlier, the Kerala High Court had indicated that it was considering asking the CBI to take over the investigations of the fire that has left 111 people dead and more than 1000 injured.
The court also said that investigators who are on the case currently should also examine the possible "role of anti-nationals" in the tragedy which occurred on Saturday night, when thousands of people had gathered at the temple for a huge fireworks display that coincides with a major festival.
The government and police have said that temple officials ignored a ban on fireworks and went ahead anyway.
Sources have confirmed to NDTV that the fireworks that were involved were made locally by amateurs who possibly used Chinese chemicals illegally brought into the country from the sea route.
