Thrissur: Instructions have been issued to conduct scan on 41 mentally-challenged patients after allegations that kidneys of some of them had been removed at a private institution where they had been lodged, an official said today.

The patients, who were rescued from the controversial Shanti Bhavan at Avanoor on January 2 and admitted to the government mental hospital, would be examined to find out if there was any truth in the allegations, District Medical Officer Dr V V Veenus said.

Following public outcry, the couple Joshy (50) and his wife Alphonsa (45), who were running the institution, were summoned to the police station yesterday and arrested. They were later released on bail.

Police had framed charges against them under IPC sections 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons) and 342 (punishment for wrongful confinement) and sections of Mental Health Act, 1987.
