In Kerala, A Coarse Facebook Battle Between Chief Ministerial Contenders

The most high-profile state campaigner for the ruling UDF coalition is Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy of the Congress.

Thiruvananthapuram: There are only days to go before Kerala votes on Monday, so it's time for the star campaigners to pull out all the stops for that last push to win over voters.

The most high-profile state campaigner for the ruling UDF coalition is Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy of the Congress. His government is trying to remain in office despite corruption allegations - and recent horrific cases of violence against women.

Mr Chandy told NDTV that he is confident. "The people know that there is no truth in the allegations....We were ready for a judicial inquiry - but then the opposition backed off. People appreciate our development agenda and our new liquor policy. The liquor lobby tried to defeat us but they cannot."

He has introduced a policy to transition Kerala, a tourist haven, into an alcohol-free state in the next 10 years. As part of that plan, liquor can now be sold only in five-star hotels. Hundreds of bars have been forced to shut down, angering a powerful lobby.

Prohibition in states like Gujarat and Bihar has been well received. Kochi resident Blisson Antony told NDTV "It will help a lot of people. The LDF (Left coalition) says it should be done by personal abstinence, not enforcement. But that is really not practical."

Businessman, Kailas Vydtanathan, was more cautious. "Prohibition has never really worked. In America, it gave rise to organised crime," he said.

The Left's campaign for a state that was once its stronghold is dominated by Pinarayi Vijayan and veteran VS Achutanandan. There is no clarity yet on who will be Chief Minister if the Left wins, but Mr Achutanandan, 92, plays down the much-reported bad blood with his rival.

"The party will decide who the chief minister will be. I am good friends with Pinarayi Vijayan," he told NDTV.

Mr Achutandan has attacked Chief Minister Chandy on corruption charges - and received threats of legal action in return. The leaders are waging war through their respective Facebook accounts.

The third front headed by the BJP has seen Prime Minister Narendra Modi holding rallies.

But the real battle for power seems to be between the two older fronts in Kerala and it is a hard-fought and sometimes bitter battle.
