Thrivanthapuram: A 17-year-old aspiring athlete hanged herself in her hostel in Kerala's Wayanand district after she was allegedly reprimanded by school authorities and her parents.
The teenager, who stayed in the women's hostel of Wayanad District Sports Council, was a triple jumper and according to her friends had been pulled up for possessing a mobile phone.
"She was questioned for possessing a mobile phone by the warden and her mother was informed," one of her friends said. "Few minutes before she was found hanging, she had received a call from her home," she added.
The father later told the police that they had not bought her the phone.
On the same day in Thrivanthapuram, two 16-year-old schoolgirls were admitted to a hospital after they consumed poison because they say they could not write their exams well.
Doctors treating the two students said the two teenagers had consumed poison used to kill dog flees but they are out of danger.
"They are stable but it will take at least two weeks to say they are out of danger," Dr Ravi Kumar told NDTV.
The two students had fallen unconscious while eating their dinner after they returned to their hostel in GV Raj Sports School last evening and were rushed to the hospital.
Having done poorly in the previous tests, the two students of class 12 were taking remedial examinations. But the teens, who play basketball and hockey for the school, said they had not done well in their papers.
"We consumed the poison because we couldn't write anything in the examination," one of the students said.
The Principal of the school and officials in the sports and education department refused to comment on the incidents. Police said, they are investigating the cases.
Earlier in May, four young award-winning athletes, trained with the Sports Authority of India had attempted suicide in Alappuzha by consuming a poisonous fruit after allegedly being harassed by seniors.
One of them had died.
