Thiruvananthapuram: An engineering student has been admitted in a private hospital in Kochi after he attempted suicide. The teenager, who had slit his wrist at the university hostel on Monday, is reportedly is out of danger.
The teen is a first year student of Cochin University Of Science and Technology. In his statement, he said he was "physically assaulted, manhandled and threatened by seniors," the police said.
The students who harassed him repeatedly were members of the Students Federation of India, the youth wing of the CPM, he further said.
On basis of the young man's statement, the police have filed a First Information Report or FIR against four students affiliated to the SFI. They have been accused of ragging and manhandling. The SFI has denied the allegations, saying the organisation has no role in the incident.
"Our preliminary investigation is still underway. We are also waiting for the internal report of the university to investigate its role or any possible negligence that led to the suicide," the investigating officer told NDTV.
While the police case was filed on Tuesday, the university has stopped all classes and has asked hostlers to go home for an indefinite period.
