A businessman in Kerala has been arrested after he allegedly ploughed his Hummer today into a security guard.
Thrissur: Businessman Muhammed Nisham, who allegedly rammed his Hummer into a security guard and killed him, has been booked under a tougher law which ensures that he will be in jail for the next six months.
The Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act enables the police to keep an accused in preventive custody for six months. The custody can even be extended under certain conditions.
Mr Nisham was booked under the act following the order of the Thrissur District Collector. The tougher law was brought in days after PC George, chief of the ruling United Democratic Front, alleged the police was shielding the accused. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has denied the charge, and assured fair investigation.
Mr Nisham, owns a beedi and tobacco empire, allegedly has links with politicians and senior police officers. So far, he has been booked in 13 cases.
"With this stricter law, his detention can be extended further. The conditions of bail will be determined by the court and not the police," R Nishanthini, Thrissur District Police Chief, told NDTV.
On January 29, Mr Nisham first assaulted security guard Chandrabose, 47, and later rammed his luxury vehicle into the man, police say. The guard, who worked at the post residential colony in Thrissur where Mr Nisham lives, had reportedly been late in opening the gate. He died after battling for life for 18 days.
In 2013, Mr Nisham ran into trouble with the police in 2013 for allowing his 9-year-old son to drive his Ferrari in their neighbourhood. He has also been accused of locking up a woman constable in his car.
