  • 30-year-old law student was brutally raped, murdered in Ernakulam
Puthuppally, Kottayam: Despite growing protests in Kerala over the rape and gruesome murder of a law student in Ernakulam, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has said that the case does not require a CBI probe. The police have made no arrests, 10 days after the incident.

"The police will soon solve the case, No need for CBI," Mr Chandy told NDTV during an election rally in Puthuppally in Kottayam.

Mr Chandy said that such an incident should not be politicised, adding, "the state has been the safest for the last five years".

The mother, who discovered the body of the 30-year-old student, has been hospitalised since. In latest of political visits, a third set of BJP leaders went to meet the family on Saturday.

"The mother says she doesn't trust anyone from police or politicians here. I don't understand why the state government doesn't want a CBI investigation", BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi.

NC Mohanan, taking part in CPM's day and night protests demanding the arrest of the accused, said, "This is not politics. The moment the culprit is arrested we will stop".

The Kerala women's commission has taken up a suo moto case to assist the police in its investigation.

KC Rosakutty, chairperson of the commission said, "The mother's condition is very disturbing. She is unable to trust anyone...not even us because of the heinous crime."

The student's one room house - where she was found dead - had no water supply and no toilet, which shows the extent of the family's poverty.
