Thiruvananthapuram: Congratulating newly sworn in Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said he looked forward to 'working closely' with the LDF government headed by him for the progress of the state.

In a tweet, PM Modi congratulated Mr Vijayan who was sworn in this evening.

''Congrats to Pinarayi Vijayan & his team. Centre looks forward to working closely with the newly sworn-in LDF Govt. for Kerala's progress'', he said.

In the run up to the fiercely fought May 16 Assembly elections in Kerala, the prime minister had courted controversy by comparing Kerala to Somalia in the area of infant mortality rate.

BJP for the first time managed to open its account in the state with former Union minister O Rajagopal winning the Nemom seat from Thiruvananthapuram.
