Thiruvananthapuram:
Three teenage girls who allegedly attempted suicide in Kerala's Thiruvananthapuram, say they had fallen from the bridge by accident.
The police, based on preliminary investigations, had said they had attempted suicide hours before they were to sit for an exam.
The girls, students of class 10, claim they had fallen off a bridge near the coast around 2.15 pm. They were rescued by the local fishermen and taken to the local Medical College Hospital, where doctors pronounced them out of danger.
The girls told NDTV that they had gone to the bridge after they found they were late for the exam.
"We had lost track of time at home, and in fact, left home very late. So we didn't go to the school, instead went to the bridge," one of them said. The old abandoned bridge is also a popular local recreation spot.
According to the girls, one of the them had tripped and fallen. "The other two fell as well, since all three were holding hands."
Two of the girls stay with relatives - their parents work in Israel and Singapore. The families were alerted after the school came to know of the incident.
The police, which earlier said the girls had attempted suicide, have told NDTV that they are not registering this case as an attempt to suicide, but would ensure the girls undergo counselling.
