Coimbatore: Twenty four trucks with medical waste from Kerala, meant to be taken to a private farm on the outskirts here, for segregating and recycling, were seized and one person was taken into custody in this connection, police said today.
On noticing trucks filled with medical waste, moving towards the farm belonging to one Chellappan Gounder in Nellikode last evening, the locals had alerted the police and local authorities.
Immediately, the officials rushed to the spot and searched the lorries, bearing Kerala and Tamil Nadu registrations, and found medical waste meant to be dumped at the farm, they said.
Preliminary investigations revealed that one Mohammed Iliyas had taken the land for lease to use it for segregating and recycling the waste, which could later be sold to prospective customers.
Cases were registered against Iliyas, Chellappan and two others hailing from Kerala, police said adding that Chellappan was taken into custody and investigations were being carried out.
Previously, on September 12, an alleged racket involving dumping of medical waste from Kerala was busted in nearby Pollachi, by an alert group of farmers, and one person was arrested.
