11-year-old student commits suicide at school near Kolkata
Kolkata: In a classroom at a private school in near Kolkata, a young girl was scolded by a teacher. An exam was underway, and the child had allegedly been seen cheating during the Chemistry test.

The 11-year-old asked for permission to use the bathroom. She then went upto the roof of the five-story building and jumped.

An hour later, her distraught parents, who had rushed her to hospital, were told she had not survived.  They say their daughter had been slapped by the teacher.

"I didn't beat her. I scolded her mildly. I held her ears. I told her take a fresh paper and write your exam. She said she wanted to go the toilet. Then she never came back," said the teacher, BK Prasad, who has been with the school for several years. He has been detained by the police for questioning.

The child's father says the school must explain how a young girl managed to make her way to the roof of her school without any adult noticing or intercepting her.

"I had one daughter. I brought her up with so much care.  These people have killed her. She had gone smiling to school. But this is the result of negligence by the school's management. The teachers, principal must be arrested," he said.

Those who knew the 11-year-old say she was an outgoing, fun loving girl. She was the only child of her parents.
