Locals found the notes in a garbage dumb on Golf Club Road, Kolkata
As a fall out of scrapping of big currency notes by the government, at least two sacks of torn Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes were found in a garbage dump in the upscale area of Kolkata on Sunday.
Locals spotted the bags with torn pieces of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes stacked in them in the garbage bin on Golf Club Road early this morning, a police official said.
Locals found the notes in a garbage dumb on Golf Club Road. Soon the police arrived at the spot to take control of the situation as local flashed the torn currency. The cops were trying to verify if the notes are real or counterfeit currency.
Police officials told NDTV that recovered currency notes seem to be genuine and were most likely dumped on Saturday night. The residents of the area were being questioned to try and identify who dumped the notes there, the official said.
Voicing support for the government's move to check black money problem, a local resident told NDTV, "(PM) Modi has done the right thing... Those who have black money are tearing up notes and throwing them."
"They should not have torn up the notes. If they had just dumped it here some poor persons would have been helped," an eyewitness said.
This incident comes a day after big currency notes were found floating in the Ganga river in Uttar Pradesh.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 8 announced that high denomination notes of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 will no longer be legal tender to fight against black money and corruption.
In an emotional speech in Goa, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said, "People voted me to fight corruption. Shouldn't I do it? The people have chosen a government and they expect so much from it." He had also said that those who have been hoarding black money will not be spared.
