Kolkata:
In a shocking incident at Madhyamgram on Kolkata's northern outskirts, men on motorcycles shot dead two people travelling in a car on a flyover. The driver of the car drove straight to the Panihati general hospital. While two of the men were declared brought dead, the driver and a fourth passenger, who also had bullet wounds, were rushed to RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata.
Around 7:30 pm, six to eight men on two motorcycles and an SUV cornered a car on the flyover in Madhyamgram and opened fire from a very close range and sped away. "Just witnessed murder before my own eyes. 4-5 bikers firing at an Alto from very, very close," tweeted an eye witness.
The incident appears to be an act of vengeance in a gang war. The two victims have been identified as Babu Sen and Lunkai, both residents of Belghoria. According to the Superintendent of Police of North 24 Parganas, Tanmoy Roy Chowdhury, "Babu Sen has several criminal charges against him. Lunkai was his henchman. We are interrogating the injured men for details."
Police sources say Babu Sen was also dabbling in real estate broking and involved with 'syndicates' supplying construction material.
The driver of the car was Jagdish Sarkar. There are at least two bullet holes in the windscreen of the car he was driving. The rear windscreen was shattered.
The fourth passenger, Abhijit Guha, is undergoing surgery for bullet wounds in his arm.
Madhyamgram is about 30 km from the heart of Kolkata, close to the airport.
