4 Students of Kolkata's Premier Medical College Arrested for Allegedly Beating Man to Death

Kolkata: Four students of Nil Ratan Sircar or NRS Medical College in Kolkata have been arrested for allegedly lynching a mentally challenged man at the college hostel in November last year, bringing the number of arrests in the case up to 7.

Three of those arrested are third year medical students; the fourth is a final year student. All of them were residents of the hostel where 28-year-old Korpan Shah was allegedly lynched.

Korpan was found dead on November 16 last year; his body was found tied to a pillar in the verandah of the third floor of the hostel of the NRS Medical College.

Almost a month after Korpan was beaten to death at the hostel early in the morning, the police had arrested a first year student. Later, two employees of the hostel canteen had also been arrested.

Initially, the police were unable to make any arrest as none of the students at the hostel reportedly shared any details of the incident with them.

A month later, a first year student of the college and a resident of the hostel was detained by the police. Later, two employees of the hostel canteen had also been arrested.

The student claimed that he had woken up that morning to find his phone missing, and some people beating a man for allegedly stealing the phone. The student claimed he merely picked up his phone and returned to his room to sleep.

The student has now given a statement identifying at least four of the students involved in the alleged lynching, said sources in the police. They have now been arrested.

Korpan, a zari worker from Howrah, is survived by his pregnant wife and four children. In the wake of the incident, several human rights groups had taken to the streets of Kolkata to demand justice for him.
