Kolkata:
The American Centre in Kolkata, which is the US cultural office there, will remain closed today and tomorrow as back-to-back minority rallies are scheduled in the city.
Today's rally is being held by the All India United Democratic Front which will hold a public meeting at Rani Rashmoni Road, which is some distance from the American Centre.
The Front is demanding reservations for Muslims and citizenship for migrants from Bangladesh. Its leader Sidiqullah Chowdhury denies any plans to protest the controversial American film on the prophet.
The Kolkata Police is, however, not taking any chances after the chaos on September 27 when thousands of Muslim protesters had broken barricades and rushed to the American Centre.
The police has today virtually barricaded a four kilometre long stretch of Chowringhee Road in the heart of the city, something that is expected to throw traffic out of gear.
Tomorrow, a federation of minority outfits will hold a rally in central Kolkata. They will be protesting the controversial American film on the Prophet.
