Kolkata:
They were just a pair of teens who bunked class to spend some time with each other in their school in Kolkata. Today, one of them is dead; the other is in hospital in critical condition.
Deepshikha and Sudipto, both students of Class 8 in Julien Day School jumped off the roof of the four-storeyed building where Sudipto's family lives on Wednesday evening. Before that, they wrote a suicide note. It is not addressed to anyone and it doesn't blame anyone. It says, "We are sorry to have disappointed our parents. We were born in the wrong time in the wrong country."
Deepshika was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital. Sudipto is in hospital with serious injuries. He also underwent a brain surgery.
The two class 8 students had bunked PT class on Wednesday. The principal called them, demanded a meeting with their parents and allegedly threatened that they would be suspended. Hours later, the two went to Sudipto's home in a four-storey building, wrote a suicide note and jumped off the roof.
"I don't know when he left the house and went to the roof. But I did not see any girl with him in the house or outside. Then the neighbour's maid came and told me my brother was lying on the ground. I couldn't believe it. When I went down I saw my brother and the girl lying next to him," says Sudipto's sister, Sushmita Chaki.
The principal of their school, M Mcnamara, has denied reports that after the students were discovered missing from class, he threatened to suspend them. "They were called to my room because they did not attend PT classes. We just wanted to know why. They were not suspended or threatened and there was no talk of a transfer certificate or suspension," he said.
The parents have not filed a complaint with the police as yet. They were not available for comment.
The school has declared a holiday today in the memory of Deepshikha who has died and in prayer for Sudipto who is struggling for his life in hospital.
