Kolkata: Junior doctors of the state-run National Medical College and Hospital went on a cease work on Thursday night alleging assault on some of their colleagues by relatives of a patient in the emergency ward.
Police said there was some altercation between the medicos and the relatives of a patient who died in the emergency ward that led to chaos in the hospital premises.
Junior doctors alleged that some "outsiders" stormed into the hospital and assaulted some of their colleagues.
According to the police, nearly 50 junior doctors ceased work in the hospital demanding immediate arrest of the attackers and presence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who is also in charge of the Health department to sort out the problem.
The superintendent of the hospital was negotiating with the agitating medicos to restore normalcy.
Hospital sources said that the senior doctors were maintaining services in the hospital and also in the emergency ward.
Nobody was arrested for the alleged assault on the medicos, the police said.
