The boy jumped from the fifth floor of his school building
Kolkata:
A Class 8 boy in West Bengal today died after allegedly jumping off the fifth floor of his school near Kolkata airport.
The incident took place at around 3.30 pm.
The police say the 13-year-old student scaled the high grill and jumped. He was declared dead in hospital.
The boy reportedly tried to commit suicide in the school earlier by slashing his wrist with a blade. When friends found him bleeding, they rushed him for first aid and informed the teachers.
The school then informed the boy's parents, police said. But in the commotion, the boy slipped away, climbed to the fifth floor of the school building, scaled a high grill and jumped.
"The boy had apparently tried to give a letter to a girl in the class. It was apparently a love letter. She refused to take it so he may have become depressed," said vice principal Sharmishtha Ghatak.
The police is investigating the matter and said it was too early to comment about the love letter. "But, yes, he tried to slash his wrist," said Arka Banerjee, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate.
As word spread, parents of other children rushed to the school. A mother, who said her son's class was on the top floor of the building, was visibly disturbed and said, "I am scared. I don't know the boy who jumped but security must be increased in the school and the grill raised."
