Kolkata:
A policeman was killed today when he intervened in clashes between armed student union members of the Congress and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in Kolkata.
Reports say that the students, some of who were carrying guns, attacked police personnel. Three people have been injured in the clashes and are being treated at the Calcutta Medical Research Institute.
The violent clashes erupted at the Harimohan Ghose College in the Garden Reach area of Kolkata during ongoing student union elections.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has said "the miscreants won't be spared."
Rapid Action Force (RAF) units and additional police troops have been deployed in the area to bring the tense situation under control.
The Trinamool claims that it was not involved and has blamed the Congress and the CPM for the violence.
