Cyclone Phailin and rain mars Maha Ashtami in Kolkata

Kolkata: Panic over cyclone Phailin and rain marred the spirit of Maha Ashtami on the second day of the Durga pujas in Kolkata today, as people tried to make the best of the situation despite the adverse weather.

People set out in the morning amidst drizzles and an overcast sky to make the most of the puja pandals which were big draws in the metropolis.

"Anjali" (prayer) was offered at the numerous pandals, which have been gorgeously decorated and illuminated and have come up over the length and breadth of the city.

The traditional Kumari Puja was held at the Ramakrishna Mission, Belur Math.

West Bengal Governor M K Narayanan witnessed the "Kumari Puja" at Belur Math.
