Kolkata:
Three persons were arrested for allegedly cheating an elderly woman over Rs 5 lakh posing as insurance agents in Salt Lake in Kolkata, the police said.
Acting on a complaint of septuagenarian Niva Banerjee, a resident of Purbachal Housing in Salt Lake, Bidhannagar Police nabbed Raju Sil, Samiran Dey and Omshankar Mandal last night, a senior officer said.
Ms Banerjee, widow of Late Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, got a call from an insurance agent, Raju Sil, asking for enrolling for a new policy this March.
The 72-year-old told Mr Sil that she was quite old for a new policy, but asked him if he could help her getting the money from the policies her late husband had enrolled for.
Getting a hint that there could be a huge amount of money, Mr Sil took the residential address of Ms Banerjee and visited her house a few days later.
"Raju Sil along with Samiran Dey visited the old lady's house and convinced her that because her late husband had life insurance policies against his name and she was the nominee, she will get a healthy amount which she can further use for other new short-term policies.
"And in the process they took five cheques on pretext of making five new life insurance policies amounting to Rs 5,15,000 which they later debited from the bank," the officer said.
"From their mobile phone call details we have got proof that these three persons are directly involved in the cheating case," he said adding the three mobile phones used in committing the crime were seized from the trio in Tuesday night's raid.
When produced at a local court the accused were sent for a seven-day police remand, he said.
