Kolkata:
The West Bengal Police on Sunday recovered 22 sacks full of explosive substances from a godown on Strand Road in Kolkata.
The haul included six quintals of ammonium nitrate used to make bombs. One person called Pankaj Garai, reportedly from Jaipur in Odisha, has been arrested.
He was, in fact, arrested on Friday in connection with a huge explosives haul at Raghunathganj in Murshidabad district on August 8. On that day, police posing as buyers had met four persons near Suti in Murshidabad who had come in a van to deliver the explosives weighing over 60 kg.
Two persons were arrested on the spot, one of the two persons who fled was arrested later. The case was handed over to the CID. The central Intelligence Bureau also visited Murshidabad for investigations.
The three arrested persons named Pankaj Gharai as the explosives supplier. Pankaj is an employee of a transport company owner who is from Odisha and had rented the godown at Strand Road from where explosives were recovered on Sunday.
Police sources this is the biggest explosives haul in recent times and could be significant in view of the Khagragarh blast in October which led to the unearthing of a terror group from Bangladesh operating in West Bengal.
