Kolkata:
In an angry Facebook post today, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said "Demonetisation is a visionless policy," for which crores of workers are suffering, both in the unorganised sector and in big industries.
"It's a major catastrophe," she wrote this afternoon. "The draconian decision of demonetisation by the Central Government has drastically affected about 5 crore workers in the country.
Ever since Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the cash ban on November 8, Ms Banerjee has consistently criticised the decision and her party has taken to the streets in Kolkata and Delhi to protest it.
The Prime Minister once referred to the Saradha chit fund scam and obliquely attacked Ms Banerjee for criticising the cash ban.
Over the last few days, the BJP's state chief Dilip Ghosh has triggered controversy by attacking Ms Banerjee's protest at Delhi's Jantar Mantar.
"According to reports, around 1.25 crore workers in the country in unorganized sector, e-commerce, leather, jute, textiles, glass, beedi, gems and jewellery sectors and daily wage earners under government schemes like MNREGA have either lost jobs or have been seriously affected due to cash crunch," Ms Banerjee wrote.
"In big industries, retrenchment process is going on, which has made or will make a huge number of workers jobless," she added.
"I can feel, with deep sorrow, the extensive sufferings and ordeal that these people are going through now," Ms Banerjee said.
