Infant lifted from Kolkata hospital found, 3 arrested

Kolkata: Much to the relief of a couple, the police on Sunday rescued their baby two days after he was lifted from a state-run hospital while his mother was asleep.

The baby, stolen from his mother's bed at the Chittaranjan Sishu Sadan, was found at Beniapukur in the city's southern part.

City Police Commissioner R K Pachnanda said that a team raided the house of Nilofar Khatun, a suspect identified in the hospital CCTV footage after the theft, in the Broad Street area where the baby was found.

On being challenged, the woman and other family members failed to show documents about the baby and his birth certificate, the commissioner said.

Nilofar admitted to the crime and was arrested along with her husband and mother.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Hq) Jawed Shamim said the baby's father later confirmed his identity.

Tanija Fatima found her child missing from the cot at the maternity ward when she woke up from sleep.

A CCTV footage in the hospital showing a burqa-clad woman moving suspiciously in the lobby of the hospital helped the police make the breakthrough.

Earlier, a 40-year-old woman gave birth to twins on the roadside near Maidan in the city late on Friday night after her husband took her first to Chittaranjan Sevasadan which refused to admit her and later to Sambhunath Pandit Hospital that also turned her away.

She died on the road after giving birth to her second child.
