Police said they have received a complaint from the student's parents alleging attempt to murder
Kolkata:
A Jadavpur University (JU) philosophy student was found hanging from the ceiling of his hostel room here on Sunday, police said.
The body of 22-year-old Soumitra Dey, who hails from Bankura district, was found in the morning.
"We found the body and it has been sent for autopsy. The investigation is going on," police said.
"He was a good student. We don't know why this happened. It is a tragic incident." JU Vice Chancellor Suranjan Das said.
"Around 11 of his classmates knocked at the door of his room. His roommate is away. When he did not answer repeated calls, they broke open the door and entered the room to find him hanging from the ceiling," said University Registrar Pradip Kumar Ghosh.
Police said they have received a complaint from Mr Dey's parents alleging attempt to murder in their son's death.
"There is no financial trouble. Why would he commit suicide? He was in perfect shape and he cannot commit suicide," said his father.
"I spoke to him yesterday (Saturday) for more than half an hour. He gave a very nice examination and everything was fine. How can it be suicide? This is planned murder. I want investigation," said Mr Dey's emotionally-charged elder brother.
