Kolkata: Five people have been arrested by Kolkata Police for allegedly kidnapping, robbing and raping a Japanese tourist in Bihar's Bodhgaya in November last year.
"This gang used to operate from Kolkata and used to dupe and sometimes physically abuse Japanese tourists," said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) PK Ghosh.
The woman, according to a complaint filed by the Japanese consulate in Kolkata, was abducted by the gang on November 23 from the city and taken to the seaside resort town of Digha. The accused then allegedly withdrew Rs 76,000 from her account using her ATM card.
Two days later, the gang allegedly drove back with the woman to Kolkata but left for Bodhgaya in Bihar soon after in the same car. Two of the accused allegedly raped the tourist on the way.
The accused then put the girl on a bus bound for Varanasi where she got in touch with her friends and contacted the Japanese consulate in Kolkata, according to Pallab Kanti Ghosh, Joint Commissioner (Detective Department), Kolkata Police. The Consulate filed a complaint with the Kolkata Police on December 26, a month after she was allegedly raped.
The police constituted a special team comprising officials from the detective department, the women's grievance cell and the bank fraud cell to investigate the case.
While three members of the gang were arrested from Kolkata, two were picked up from Bodhgaya. Two of the accused have been charged with rape; three others have been booked for cheating, criminal conspiracy and kidnapping among other offences.
More arrests are likely soon, Mr Ghosh said.
