Kolkata:
In a major haul, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials today arrested two persons for allegedly smuggling 45 kilograms of gold, worth Rs 13.5 crore, into the country.
"Acting on a tip-off, the DRI sleuths arrested the duo when they were on their way to Kolkata from Basirhat in North 24-Parganas district in a car," official sources said in Kolkata.
The carrier has been identified as Barin Biswas and was accompanied by his driver, they said.
Concealed in the car, the yellow metal was suspected to be smuggled from Bangladesh through the porous land border.
Both Biswas and his driver were interrogated for hours and later were produced before a city court which remanded them to judicial custody till Wednesday, the sources added.
