With music concerts held in malls and cultural functions at premier institutions, Kolkata today celebrated World Music Day with fervour.
Alliance Francaise, Kolkata organised ten concerts across the city catering to all ages and tastes but with the slant on western music.
The century-old Calcutta School of Music held a musical concert by its students celebrating Kolkata's glorious tradition of western music.
The Academy for Musical Excellence (AMEC), a premier music institute, has planned 20 concerts, which included a piano concert for its Yuva Music Festival.
"We wish to provide a platform for the young artists and which day is more appropriate than June 21 through our activities continue throughout the year," institute spokesman said.
All front-line city bands have been performing since morning at a well-known shopping mall in Salt Lake area.
"We celebrate everyday for music. But selecting one day is also important as we feel connected with our fraternity here and other corners of the world," 'Cactus' band frontman Sidhu told PTI.
In a move blending music with films, six popular music bands including 'Paraspathar' performed at yet another mall in south Kolkata in which cine stars Parambrata Chatterjee and Raima Sen joined.
