Kolkata:
A day after an under-construction flyover collapsed in central Kolkata, killing 25 people, the city police's crime branch has arrested three employees of Hyderabad-based company IVRCL, which was building the flyover. Among the arrested is IVRCL's Kolkata operations in charge, Mallikarjun. The three will be produced in court on Saturday.
The police had filed a case against IVRCL for murder and attempt to murder hours after the Vivekanda flyover collapsed in Kolkata's Burrabazar area yesterday around noon.
The Kolkata Police team, sent to Hyderabad, has not arrested anyone yet, according to reports last received. In Kolkata, three offices of the company have been sealed.
Meanwhile, the state government has suspended two senior engineers of the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) overseeing the flyover construction. The flyover was a joint venture project between KMDA and IVRCL.
The KMDA has ordered the immediate inspection of the rest of the 2.2 km flyover for structural stability.
The government has also ordered the structural stability assessment of all flyovers are in use in the city and those under construction at the moment.
A high-power committee, headed by the chief secretary, has also been formed to probe the cause of the flyover collapse. It has to submit a report in three weeks.
