Kolkata: Gay rights activists hold rally over Supreme Court verdict

Kolkata: Gay rights activists today took out a rally in the city expressing disappointment over the Supreme Court verdict restoring criminalization of homosexuality, calling it "violation of basic human rights".

"We feel disappointed with the judgement. It is violation of basic human rights. We are against it," they said while demanding restoration of their rights. They called the verdict as a sad day for Indian democracy.

"A sad day for democracy where the SC bench denies the LGBT community its constitutional right to equality and protection against discrimination," they said.

On December 11, 2013, the Supreme Court set aside the July, 2009 Delhi High Court judgement decriminalizing consensual gay sex between adults in private.
