Kolkata: Angry local residents fought a pitched battle with the police after a cyclist was run over and killed by a speeding truck at Patipukur on the northern fringe of the metropolis.
The cyclist died on the spot and the locals damaged the truck and beat up its driver, the police said.
The police later rescued the driver and arrested him.
The vehicle was seized, sources said.
A huge contingent of police and RAF personnel were deployed to bring order in the area near Patipukur Railway Bridge, officials said.
