Kolkata:
The three men who were convicted yesterday for gang-raping a woman, who they had abducted from Kolkata's Park Street in 2012, have been sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment.
Pronouncing the quantum of punishment during in-camera proceedings, Additional Sessions Judge Chiranjib Bhattacharya of the City Sessions Court in Kolkata also imposed fines of Rs.1 lakh each on the three convicts - Ruman Khan, Naser Khan and Sumit Bajaj.
"The judge after considering all aspects sent them to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment with fine of Rs.1 lakh each. In default, they would have to undergo another six months of rigorous imprisonment," said a lawyer.
The woman they raped, Suzette Jordan, died of Meningitis in March. She was just about 40.
Then 37, Ms Jordan had been gang-raped on the night of February 5, 2012 by five men who had offered to drop her home from a night club at Kolkata's posh Park Street. She had filed her complaint with the police a few days later and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had called it a "sajano ghatana" or fabricated case.
But, senior police officer Damayanti Sen had pursued the case and identified the five accused. She was later shunted out from her post. Three of the five accused were arrested. Two others, including the main accused Kader Khan are still absconding.
Trial in the case began only in 2013, delayed by the accused who demanded copies of the crucial CCTV footage that had been sent to Hyderabad for forensic tests. The accused claimed the case was false. Ms Jordan was examined and cross examined over almost six months.
