Kolkata:
A lawmaker of the ruling Trinamool Congress party in West Bengal has been arrested on direct orders of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee after reports reached her that he was involved in a clash at a college that left 15 people injured.
Lawmaker Dipak Haldar, a member of the legislative Assembly from Diamond Harbour, was arrested minutes after Ms Banerjee issued the order from north Bengal where she is currently visiting.
Clashes erupted today around noon at the Fakirchand College in Diamond Harbour, about 60 km from Kolkata, allegedly between two factions of the students' wing of the ruling Trinamool Congress over the control of the union room.
One of the rival groups was allegedly led by Mr Haldar, a local Trinamool legislator.
Mr Haldar has denied any involvement but the state education minister Partha Chatterjee said the Chief Minister has ordered his arrest.
Before his arrest, Mr Haldar claimed the whole thing was a conspiracy by Trinamool block president Umapada Purkayastha who, in turn, has denied the charge.
When clashes began, college authorities called in the police. A small force arrived but waited at the gates for permission to enter the campus.
When they got permission and entered, they were outnumbered. More forces had to be rushed.
By then, 15 people, most of them students, had been injured. At least three of them had serious injuries and have been admitted to hospital.
