Over 100 shanties gutted in fire at Kolkata slum

Kolkata: A massive fire razed to the ground over a hundred  homes at a slum in Kaliakapur area on the EM Bypass in the eastern part of the city this evening.

Till reports last came in, there has been no loss of life but it took 20 fire engines more than two hours to bring the fire under control and hundreds of people have been left homeless.

How the fire -- which started around 6 pm --  started is not clear. But as it spread from one shanty to another, gas cylinders exploded, worsening the blaze.

Hundreds of people from the slum spilled on to the eastern metropolitan bypass after the fire broke out. Traffic on the bypass was completely paralysed.

The fire brigade and emergency services minister Javed Khan has said shelters would be put up immediately for the people. They would be given food and provisions to rebuild their homes.
