Kolkata:
A major fire broke out at a plywood godown in the central part of the city here which took over two hours for 35 fire tenders to bring the blaze under control.
No casualty was reported in the fire that spread from the godown located on congested Raja Rammohan Roy Sarani to its neighbouring buildings, city Mayor Sovan Chatterjee, who had visited the spot, said, adding that the residents of the neighbouring buildings were evacuated, said.
Water from a Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) reservoir in the nearby Raja Subodh Mallick Square was used by fire fighters to douse the flame, the Mayor said.
Mr Chatterjee said the state would make all arrangements for providing food and shelter to the affected.
Fire Services Minister Javed Khan, who supervised the firefighting operations, said that a forensic test would be done to ascertain the cause of the fire.
