Schoolchildren display paintings on Kolkata Metro station walls

Kolkata: The walls of Esplanade and Park Street Metro stations in Kolkata have been transformed into a huge canvas with thousands of school children displaying their paintings on the subject of malnutrition.

The paintings highlight a child's interpretation of nutrition and its role in the growth of children and are being exhibited as part of 'Art of Nutrition' campaign by GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare (GSKCH) and Child in Need Institute (CINI).

Around 7000 paintings and sketches collected from 154 schools across West Bengal are being exhibited in the two Metro stations with the aim to raise awareness on malnutrition.

About 25,000 children had submitted their paintings for the show.

Inaugurating the week-long exhibition on Wednesday, Metro Railway General Manager P B Murty "It is delightful to see how every child has a different interpretation of the issue and has captured it brilliantly on canvas".

GSKCH has already donated Rs 5 million to fight malnutrition among children, which is being supported by actress Vidya Balan. The company will contribute Re 1 to the cause for every large pack of Horlicks, a product of the company, sold in Bengal.

The funds will be used by CINI for various Anganwadi programmes in the state.
